Steve Poltz 9th Annual 50th Birthday Bash ft The Rugburns

w/ Anya Marina, special guest Tim Flannery, and Megan Slankard!

Steve Poltz

Steve Poltz is not normal.
He was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia (Canada) but has lived most of his life inSouthern California and those geographic poles are quite likely responsible for his unhinged genius. He is a dual citizen – Canada/USA – but has often said that, “should a hostage situation arise, I become conveniently Canadian.” Over the course of his life he’s met Elvis Presley (who hugged his sister for far too long), trick or treated at Liberace’s house (each finger had a diamond ring), was Bob Hope’s favourite altar boy (according to him), bravely traveled the world busking before he knew how to do it, famously co-wrote “You Were Meant For Me” with Jewel, pissed off David Cassidy and can count some of the world’s coolest people as fans.
He’s also an ex high school wrestler (98 pound class), an obsessed baseball fan, a yoga practitioner, a hopeless romantic, a smart-ass philosopher and a child-like adventurer/observer with an absurdist’s view of this crazy world and the various life-forms that inhabit it. He’s interested in it all – the big and the small, the sublime and the ridiculous, the terrestrial and the cosmic. He doesn’t just love life, he rides it bareback, naked, at a full gallop with one hand clenched deep in its mane and the other waving to anyone watching as he flies by. Time is ticking and he has work to do…

The Rugburns

The Rugburns group formed and began playing in the local San Diego, CA area as a duo. In the beginning, Steve Poltz and Robert Driscoll were acoustic duo playing in various coffeehouses and bars including the Blarney Stone Pub, Innerchange Coffee House, Megalopolis, and Java Joe's. They would sometimes be joined by Gerald "Child" McMullin making them a temporary acoustic power trio. The group released several self-produced cassette tapes in this band formation and were becoming a huge local draw and favorite in San Diego.

Anya Marina

ANYA MARINA releases her fourth LP, Paper Plane, in early 2016 on her own Good Rope Records (through Tone Tree). Recorded in Portland, Oregon, and Brooklyn, New York, Paper Plane was produced with help from Dave Depper (Death Cab for Cutie), Eric Hutchinson, Leo Sidran and Gary Philips. Deeply felt yet approachable, it marks Marina’s first independent release since her 2005 debut, Miss Halfway.

"If I folded my heart into a pretty paper plane and flew it across the Hudson would it come back again?” Marina wonders on "Shut Up," a lyrical slow-burner that lends the album its title. It's a hint at what's to come on the New York City-based artist's latest effort, whose 12 tracks play like 12 love letters, each a meditation on relationship in its various forms.

Hutchinson lends his vocals and production skills to Paper Plane’s first two singles: the infectious “Gimme Resurrection,” a song whose themes will be familiar to anyone who’s ever wished for a do-over in life, and “Ordinary Dude,” a bouncy number about a make-or-break moment in a relationship.

Other highlights from Paper Plane’s 12 tracks include “We Were Happy Once,” a dreamy ballad co-written with Bess Rogers (Ingrid Michaelson, Secret Someones) that showcases Marina’s trademark razor-sharp lyrics (“sometimes I play a game to see if I still love you / pretend we never met and I know nothing of you”); “Candy,” a beguilingly sweet song about addiction and saying goodbye; and a cover of Huey Lewis’ “The Power of Love” like you’ve never heard it before.

After releasing two critically acclaimed albums (Slow & Steady Seduction: Phase II and Felony Flats) and an EP (Spirit School) on Chop Shop/Atlantic, Marina turned to Pledge Music to fund Paper Plane.

“Feedback from my Pledge supporters actually helped me solidify which tracks I wanted to include on the album,” Marina says. “It’s exciting to have such an intimate and immediate dialogue with my audience. It feels very new and very now.”

Best known for “Satellite Heart,” from the platinum-selling soundtrack to Twilight: New Moon, and her provocative cover of T.I.’s “Whatever You Like” (6 million YouTube views and counting), Marina’s songs have been featured in national ad campaigns and influential TV series (Grey's Anatomy, Gossip Girl), remixed by Interpol’s Sam Fogarino, and called “a mixture of Liz Phair sex appeal with a dash of [Carl] Jung” by Rolling Stone. She has toured with Jason Mraz, Paolo Nutini, Chris Isaak, The Dandy Warhols, Tristan Prettyman, and Emiliana Torini, among others.

Marina, who once worked as a DJ in San Diego, recently returned to her broadcasting roots when she began hosting We Know Nothing, a weekly podcast with comedians Sam Morril, Phil Hanley and guests. She will hit the road this fall with Joshua Radin before launching a national tour for Paper Plane in early 2016.

Tim Flannery

Like California’s Santa Ana winds, the journey that has led Tim Flannery to this point in his life has been equally constant and unpredictable. Take baseball. A constant presence in his life since childhood, the game’s blustery days and calm nights have shifted him, comforted him and ultimately have brought him to a new and unexpected turn. After 25 years with the San Diego Padres organization (from player to minor league manager to coach to broadcaster)...

Megan Slankard

A NATIVE CALIFORNIAN INDIE ROCKER,
Megan has sold over 35,000 copies of her four previous independently released CDs, and she is currently touring across the US to support her band's brand new fifth album, "Running on Machinery", which was recorded with the help of Nashville producer, Alex Wong (Vienna Teng, Delta Rae).

Her preceding album, A Token Of The Wreckage was recorded with help from David Bryson (Counting Crows) and Jerry Becker (Train). Her songs have also won several awards: in 2013 alone, she was a finalist in the UK Songwriting Contest, a finalist in the International Songwriting Contest (ISC), and a finalist in the Show Me the Music Contest. She was also a finalist for Best Female Artist in the International Acoustic Music Awards (IAMA).

Touring extensively throughout the United States and Europe, Megan's adventures include opening for Jamie Cullum at a sold-out Fillmore, playing electric guitar on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live as part of the Jeff Campbell Band, singing the National Anthem to a crowd of 45,000 Giants baseball fans, performing duets with Pat Monahan of Train, and touring with Dire Straits co-founder David Knopfler throughout Europe.
