Maka Roots

Maka Roots is a long time Reggae ambassador who stands firm and true, reverent and respectful to the traditional and foundation roots reggae sound and esthetic. His music is original, modern and progressive while remaining orthodox. Heartfelt. Serious and joyful. Positive word sound with a conscious message. A message that is lyrically sharp, potent and relevant. His reputation and musical legacy is solidified as one of San Diego’s top roots reggae artists. His musical journey began in 1984, after the profound impact reggae music and its spiritual message had on him. His first band, Gen-Iration was formed with his like-minded school friends. The young band was embraced by Makeda of World Beat Productions and was fortunate to have opened for many top reggae artists. Maka is a founding member, keyboardist and vocalist of Hawaii's once top reggae band The Heartical Crew/THC. Their roots sound was influential on many of today's top reggae artists from the islands. The band would reach a pinnacle in 2000 with the release of ‘Jah Music’ and an appearance at Sierra Nevada World Music Festival. After many years of directing all aspects of the band's business, he focused on his personal musical path, stepping from behind the keyboards and up to the microphone as a conscious roots vocalist. In 2006 he released his debut solo project entitled 'I SIght'. His latest full length release, ‘Roots Tonic’ was produced with his long time Bredren and keyboardist Joe Bressler for the riddimBank label and was nominated for an SDMA in San Diego. Other recent works include 4 singles on the Big Cup label. For over three decades he has been performing in reggae bands. In that time he has shared crucial experiences with the international reggae family and Bredren and Sistren of Ras Tafari, performing with and backing many top artists. He remains steadfast and continues to perform and record and is committed to his musical mission. Like all the great roots reggae singers that influenced him, he is equally serious about his faith, Livity and music. His works are respected by his musical peers and well received in the reggae community. Through years of reasoning with Elders of Ras Tafari, he realized it was truly a divine force guiding his path, as he strives to live his life as his elders, with humility and love. Experience, wisdom and an unwavering sense of purpose are the strength and the spirit driving his music and message. Standing up in solidarity and defending truths and rights. Reggae Music. Blessed. Sanctified. Edified. A music that was born in Jamaica and brought to the four corners of the Earth. Universal music in reverence of the Most High with Love and Respect for all people.
