Femi Kuti is the heart and soul of modern Afrobeat. Femi’s father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, created the style -a blend of traditional Nigerian drum patterns, the smooth groove of highlife and American soul, funk and R&B –and took it to the world, inspiring people with insistent dance beats and lyrics bristling with political statements. One People One Worldwill be released by Knitting Factory Records on February 23, 2018. Femi recorded most of the album in chaotic Lagos, with musicians from The Positive Force, and his son, Omorinmade Anikulapo –Kuti. “On this album, I kept to my roots and let the music flow through me, without diluting it. I didn’t think funk, or Afrobeat, or anything else. If you hear something in the melodies, it may be there, but as a composer, I surrendered to the higher forces that give me this gift to play music and let it flow out of me.”
Since I was a kid I've always been a silly outgoing spirit. I attribute this to my silly outgoing family. We can definitely tell some jokes, we can definitely tell some stories, and everyone got a turn doing so while growing up.
From early on in my youth I was able to channel my creativity into different avenues of the creative arts. Whether it was teaching myself various musical instruments (turntables, percussion/drums, basically anything I could find to make a sound), to creative writing, or mimicking accents, or different cartoon characters, I always loved any type of creative expression.
At age 19 I started a job as an outside sales rep in the action sports industry. This gave me the opportunity to work my own schedule and allow me to continue pursuing my creative and musical passions. Since then, I've been able to balance being a sales rep with being a musician and creative cat.
As a sales rep for the past 20 years now, I drive A LOT. I average about 35K miles a year and while most of my time is spent on the phone working, the rest of the time is spent listening to audio books and podcasts. I average about 20 audio books a year and who knows how many podcasts. Multiply that by 20 years and it equals over 400 audio books! Over the years I’ve always thought to myself, I think I would be good at this, actually, I know I would be good at this. Light bulb!
This long road of theatrical mayhem, DJ and drummer in a rock band by night, and the many hours on the road listening to audio books has evolved into this new venture as a voice over artist.
As an avid story teller I hope you enjoy the latest best selling audio book!
